Research

The Department of History currently has around 60 active researchers and over 100 PhD students.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), it was ranked 5th in the UK for research and top of the Russell Group for impact. The department was also ranked 20th in the 2018 world QS rankings.

Research covers every historical specialism from the medieval to the modern world, including British, European and global history.  Members of the department work with many cross-disciplinary centres including the Centres for Late Antique and Medieval Studies, Enlightenment Studies, Early Modern Studies, King’s Contemporary British History, the Sir Michael Howard Centre for the History of War, and the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies.

The Department has an exceptionally active programme of research seminars, some of which are organised in close collaboration with the Institute for Historical Research. This is in addition to a varied programme of conferences and other events. King’s offers many funding opportunities for PhD studies including the department’s Hans Rausing bursaries in the history of science and technology.
