Techniques available at the Mass Spectrometry Facility at Waterloo Campus:

LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry)

Ionisation:

Electrospray Ionisation (ESI) including Nanospray (NSI)

Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation (APCI)

Types of Analysis:

Qualitative & Quantitative Analysis

Sample:

Small Molecular Weight <1 kDa e.g. drugs, food  components, endogenous compounds, vitamins, pesticides, toxins, hydrocarbons, essential oils, small peptides

Middle Molecular Weight 1 –10kDa e.g. Synthetic polypeptides and polysaccharides

Large Molecular Weight >10 kDa e.g. polypeptides, proteins, DNA, RNA

GC-MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry)

Ionisation:

Electron Ionisation(EI)

Types of Analysis:

Qualitative & Quantitative Analysis

Sample:

MALDI-TOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation - Time of Flight)

Large Molecular Weight >10 kDa e.g. polypeptides, proteins, DNA, RNA
