Posted on 24/07/2013
Professor Patricia Howlin, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Child Psychology at King’s College London Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), has been awarded the 2013 INSAR Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) research and services.
The International Society for Autism Research (INSAR) is an organisation dedicated to presenting and promoting an integrated approach and understanding of ASD research, which includes focusing on basic science discoveries and service delivery initiatives, as well as global perspectives on ASD.
Of the award, Professor Howlin stated ‘It is a great honour to be recognised by INSAR in this way. As a clinician and researcher, my work has focused on the development and life-time trajectories of individuals with autism and related disorders; in particular in improving knowledge about effective interventions for young children and about the skills and needs of adults with these conditions. I would like to thank all my colleagues, past and present, and the many people with autism and their families who have collaborated in this work and I look forward to continuing my research on ways to improve outcomes for individuals with autism across the lifespan.’
Professor Howlin was a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society. She was the first person in the UK to be made a Professor of Clinical Child Psychology and was a founding editor of the UK journal ‘Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice’. In addition to her IoP appointment, Professor Howlin also holds the post of Professor of Developmental Disorders at Sydney University and in 2011 received the Autism Association of Western Australia award for services to autism.
