KHP Centre for Neurodegeneration Research

Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Huntington’s and motor neuron disease are rightly feared because they are disabling from the outset and relentlessly progressive. Our brain function defines who we are and how others see us, which is why these conditions are so challenging to patients, their family and friends.

MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders

The Medical Research Council Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders at King’s College London opened in November 2016, and is directed by Professor Oscar Marín. The Centre brings together world leading researchers across King’s College London with the mission to identify the biological mechanisms underlying developmental brain disorders, with the ultimate goal of translating this knowledge into clinical advances that change the lives of all those affected.

Damage to the nervous system results in non-neuronal cells taking a stage-role. New and exciting roles continue to be discovered for brain-resident immune cells, such as microglia, and for macrophages that are constantly active and checking their environment for signs of injury or infection.
