JMCE Annual Conference 2016: The Dark Side of Globalisation
The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at King’s College London, in cooperation with the International Political Economy research group, are organising a workshop on The Dark Side of Globalization. In times of rampant anti-globalist rhetoric and increasingly practice, we hope that this workshop will provide the platform for a fruitful discussion on the overlooked dimensions of globalisation, and how these might contribute to providing an explanation of the current backlash.

The “Responsibility While Protecting” (RWP) initiative is a Brazilian proposal that marked a new stage in the evolution of R2P norm, which member states adopted at the UN World Summit in 2005. This initiative also underlines Brazil’s ambition of acting as a global player. Since its presentation at the 2011 UN General Assembly, RwP has drawn the attention of academics and policy makers alike because of its emphasis on capacity building to avert crises before they happen.
This debate will allow experts in RwP to debate the current status of this proposal, its potential to represent a shift in the implementation of Security council mandate and the challenges related to the commitment with this concept.
Organisers: King’s Brazil Institute, Jean Monnet Centre for Europe in the World at King's, and Brazilian Embassy in London.
Speakers:
- Prof. Kai Kenkel – he is Associate Professor in the Institute of International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and currently Associated Researcher at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies in Hamburg. Joint CEL/JMCE Legal Workshop:
European Union: Solidarity in Question
21st June 2013
King's College London, Strand Building
Call for Papers deadline: 15 January 2013
The EU's response to the current economic crisis indicates that solidarity is more than an abstract virtue, but in fact is a key element that has significant practical consequences. Yet, the meaning, legal implications and the precise role of solidarity in the different areas of EU law is still an open question. The concept of solidarity is normally associated with national welfare state, which includes tax redistribution and social policies as a consequence of social contract among its citizens. With the development of the European Union from a pure economic organisation to an entity with political, social and human rights dimensions, the concept of solidarity is becoming to play a more substantial role at supranational level.
New Book:
Globalisation, Migration, and the Future of Europe: Insiders and Outsides
Following the success of our 2010 Annual Conference, a new book gathering together the papers presented on the day has now been published:
Talani, L.S. (ed) (2011) Globalisation, Migration and the Future of Europe: Insiders and Outsiders, London: Routedge
Showcasing an original, interdisciplinary approach, this edited volume examines the effect of migration on the domestic politics of individual states and how they are eroding the distinctions between the domestic and foreign policy, the ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ components of politics and law. We are certain that it will make an important contribution to the field.
