Job description

To participate in the research project in line with the objectives defined in the project description and with the overall objectives of the Vascular Biology & Inflammation Group, School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and Department of Old Age Psychiatry and UK Dementia Research Institute, Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neurosciences.

Key objectives: 

• Provide technical and organisational support to other group members in the laboratory  
• Engage in research and produce written research outputs, as set out in the research project 
• Conduct literature and database searches 
• Continue to update knowledge and develop skills 
• Contribute to the production of research reports and publications 
• Participate in all project meetings, including symposia 
• Participate in and contribute to the development and implementation of research programmes in dermal cell biology, including microvascular endothelial cells and fibroblasts. 
• To contribute to the running, internal organisation and quality assurance processes of the School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences and Ageing Research at King’s (ARK)
• Balance the pressures of research and administrative demands and competing deadlines 
• Compliance at all times with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations with responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of others in the working environment. 
• Ensure confidentiality on all matters and information obtained during the employment. 
• Undertake any other reasonable duties that are relevant with the Role Outline 

Communication & networking:

• Attendance at conferences and other meetings as necessary to present research findings.
• Travel to Stavanger University Hospital for research presentations and discussions.

Analysis & research:

• Analyse and interpret the results of research and generate original ideas based on outcomes

Team work, teaching & learning support:

Contribute to the integration and collaboration of research project between School of Cardiovascular Medicine and Sciences, Department of Old Age Psychiatry, UK Dementia Research Institute at KCL and Centre for Age-related Medicine, Stavanger University Hospital and with external collaborators. 

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 1 year.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.       BSc and PhD in biomedical sciences discipline 

2.       Postdoctoral research experience (3+ years) 

3.       Knowledge of cell and molecular biology techniques 

4.       Research skills including primary cell culture & concocal imaging techniques 

5.       High level of computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) 

6.       Strong interpersonal and excellent written communication skills 

7.       Self-motivated, able to work independently and prioritise own workload 

8.       Ability to keep clear and well-organized laboratory notes and records 

9.       Travel to Stavanger University Hospital for project presentations and discussions 

10.     Willingness to perform research at across different campuses at King’s College London and at Stavanger University Hospital as necessary 

11.     Disseminate research through conferences & peer reviewed papers 

Desirable criteria

1.       Experience of Super Resolution Microscopy Tecniques 

2.       Experience of generating and using toxic forms of amyloid-b 

3.       Experience of generating and using toxic forms of a-synuclein 

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
