The Department of War Studies wishes to appoint a Lecturer in International Relations in order to add significantly to the Department's teaching and research capacity.
If successful, you will have a track record of high-quality publications and innovative teaching in the field of International Relations. The Department is open to applications from all research areas within International Relations, broadly defined. The Department has a number of IR staff, with particular research focus on security, technology, violence, ethics, gender, migration and borders. We are a theoretically and methodologically diverse Department, including key strengths in critical approaches and methodologies. We welcome applications from candidates whose research contributes to or expands these research areas from a range of perspectives.
You will contribute to the delivery of teaching in the Department of War Studies at the BA and MA level. Applications from candidates with the ability to teach in the areas of international relations theory, global governance, and critical security studies are particularly welcome.
You will also undertake and publish high-quality scholarship and play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent
- Take responsibility for the planning, organisation and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the Department
- Develop and use a variety of methods to assess student learning and provide feedback that is timely, relevant and appropriate
- Undertake high-quality research in the subject area, publish the findings in highly rated, internationally recognised journals, and participate in the major internationally recognised academic networks
- Sustain high-quality research activity through a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and secure the funding required for this research as required
- Supervise postgraduate research students and/or research staff
- Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Senior Tutor and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support problems.
- Attend meetings and conferences to share and present research findings, which creates a professional network and enhances the national and international standing of the Department
- Engage in professional development as appropriate.
- Carry out administration as requested by the Head of Department
- Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria (Grade 6 & Grade 7)
- PhD awarded in International Relations or another a relevant subject
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Experience of innovative curriculum and teaching design
- Emerging research agenda and track record in research dissemination
- Experience of interacting with a wide variety of non-academic stakeholders
- Established communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Commitment to contributing to diversity and inclusion efforts
Essential criteria(Grade 7)
- Candidates must have a PhD thesis published or in press as a monograph AND at least 2 papers published/ in press in peer-reviewed journals; OR at least 5 research papers published/in press in peer reviewed journals
- Proven ability in and experience of academic leadership
- Experience of successful grant capture
- Experience in supervising PhD students
- Track record in research group leadership and activities
- Evidence of research impact
Depending on your experience, you may be appointed on a Grade 6 or a Grade 7 post, the salaries for this are detailed below:
Grade 6: £41,386 - £48,414 per annum, including London weighting allowance.
Grade 7: £49,737 - £58,421 per annum, including London weighting allowance
