Job description

The Dickson Poon School of Law is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Law, who will contribute to the teaching, research, and other academic and professional activities at the Dickson Poon School of Law.

The successful candidate’s principal teaching contribution will be either in Public or Criminal Law in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The successful candidate's will be actively involved in the administration and academic life of a world leading law school and will carry out administrative duties in the Dickson Poon School of Law.

The successful candidate will be responsible to the Executive Dean.

The Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College London is one of the oldest law schools in England and recognised globally as one of the best law schools in the world. The School is ranked 15th in the world and 5th in the UK in the QS World University Rankings for Law 2024. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, the School was rated 4th in relation to its 4* publications and 6th for research power in the UK.

The Dickson Poon School of Law is housed in the East Wing of Somerset House, a Grade One listed building, on the College’s Strand Campus, no more than a few minutes’ walk from the Royal Courts of Justice and Inns of Court.  We are located midway between Westminster and the City of London, enabling us to have excellent contacts with practitioners and policy-makers. There is a strong tradition of engagement with the legal profession.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract (subject to a probation period).

This is a full-time post.

Key responsibilities

  • To take a key role in planning, organising and delivering teaching UK Public or Criminal Law. Public Law would include Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Human Rights Law.
  • To undertake high quality research in the area of Public Law, or Criminal Law, broadly defined.
  • To act as module coordinator for one or more of the courses and supervise LLM dissertations.
  • To carry out administrative duties as requested by the Executive Dean.
  • Contribute to the holistic development of our students through pastoral care and engagement in student experience activities, including by acting as a personal tutor.
  • Participate in student development processes, including student progress monitoring, education assessment and examination.
  • Be available for duties during assessment and marking periods.
  • Be responsible for marking formative and summative work and to provide timely and effective feedback working closely with module leaders and programme directors and the professional services programme and assessments team.
  • Accept academic administrative responsibilities, such as in School education or research roles, and in School or University governance structures, as commensurate with the candidate’s seniority and experience.
  • Engage in professional development to further the post-holder’s career.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1.       Completed or soon to be completed (i.e. within 3 months of submission) PhD, DPhil, JSD in Law

2.       Demonstrable ability to publish research in Public Law or Criminal Law

3.       Track record of excellent teaching, and knowledge of Public Law or Criminal Law

4.       A commitment to, and interest in the areas of Public Law or Criminal Law as the primary focus of the candidate’s teaching

5.       Excellent oral and written communication skills

6.       Competence with electronic learning platforms and other IT skills

7.       Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships

8.       Ability to work to and meet deadlines

9.       Ability to work both on one’s own initiative and as part of a team and a track record of collegiality

10.     Willingness to contribute to the School’s culture of collaboration

Desirable criteria

1.       The potential to attract funding for research or for the candidate’s research agenda to have impact

2.       Significant experience of module leadership

3.       Experience of successfully undertaking academic administrative roles

4.       Teaching award e.g., Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE)
