We drive the translation of this strong basic science into advances in clinical practice to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment, across Guy’s, FWB, St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill campuses.

About the role:

We are looking to recruit one senior technician who will contribute to the smooth running of our of SCMMS research labs and spaces, especially the ones based in our South Bank Section (FWB and St Thomas). The successful applicant is expected to contribute to a number of technical objectives including but not limited to, health and safety compliance, good laboratory practice, maintenance of equipment and smooth running of the laboratories, interactions with external stakeholders (engineers, delivery staff, maintenance and security personnel etc.), ordering goods and act as a point of contact for staff enquiries.

The post would suit someone looking to pursue a career in professional services (laboratory-based) within a university academic research environment. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and motivated team player, able to work well with a technical team who deliver a comprehensive technical service across multiple locations. The successful candidate will be able to work independently when appropriate, possessing excellent planning and communication skills and able to prioritise their own workload effectively. They will be expected to build relationships with a wide set of stakeholders across academic, technical, finance, health & safety, estates & facilities directorates to support the research and educational objectives of the School.  The appointed person will help manage laboratory facilities and support a number of researchers working on cardiovascular projects. Responsibilities may include contributing to experimental work.

This post will be offered on a permanent basis for 100% FTE, for 35 hours a week.

This is a fully on-campus post (no hybrid working) - 100% full time equivalent.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1.      Minimum level 4 qualification, e.g., higher apprenticeship, HNC or other Level 4 award, plus work experience in relevant technical/scientific posts OR Considerable knowledge and skills gained through work experience in relevant technical or scientific posts.

2.      Previous laboratory experience with cell culture.

3.      A willingness to work with laboratory animals.

4.      Evidence of an active commitment to career development including professional registration, such as RSci, or working towards CSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs.

5.      Extensive technical experience and knowledge of a range of scientific procedures and the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and the environment impact.

6.      Clear spoken and written communication skills, with proficient computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills.

7.      Proactive and responsive to contacts in immediate area, across the wider organisation and externally (e.g., suppliers) to build relationships and network.

8.      Solutions-focused self-starter, with excellent planning and analytical skills, able to manage competing priorities and work with minimal supervision.

9.      Good working knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability and training and induction of new staff.

10.  Knowledge of environmental impacts of laboratory work and an interest in reducing the negative impacts.

11.  Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours e.g. occasional emergency call out at weekends.

12.  Be willing to supervise/advise junior team members, giving feedback on performance levels and training where necessary.

Desirable criteria

1.      Experience of tissue isolation and cell biology.

2.      Experience in small animal models of disease.

3.       The ideal candidate will already hold a Home Office animal license (PIL) or will be willing to train to obtain a PIL.
