The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS), is one of six schools that make up the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM) at King College London. The School drives translation of world-leading basic science into advances in clinical practices with activities focusing on the Cardiac Biomedicine Department of Diabetes and Vascular Biomedicine.

About the role

The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences is seeking to appoint a new School Technical Manager to oversee and provide management and high quality technical support to the School and the wider Faculty/ University. The post holder is a member of the School’s professional services team and will report to the School Manager.

The research activities of the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) focus on the fundamental molecular, cellular, and physiological processes that underly normal and abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic function in state-of-the art core facilities. We drive the translation of this strong basic science into advances in clinical practice to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment, across Guy’s, St Thomas’, Waterloo and Denmark Hill campuses.

The School is a partner of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ and hosts the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence at King's.

The post holder will lead on technical support across all departments supported by technical operations managers and technicians, including ensuring compliance with health and safety and other governance requirements, resource management (including space and equipment), upholding good laboratory practice and contributing to strategic planning and development of School policy.

The successful candidate will have an excellent track record in technical management and a broad knowledge of scientific procedures, experience of line management, excellent communications and networking skills and an ability to work independently, setting the technical agenda for the School.

This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Minimum level 6 qualification in a relevant subject, such as an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, plus substantial work experience in relevant technical/scientific service management posts OR Extensive work experience in relevant technical/ scientific posts with a managerial experience/ or qualification.
  2. Evidence of an active commitment to professional development, such as working towards CSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs.
  3. Comprehensive technical experience and knowledge of a wide range of scientific procedures and the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and their environmental impact.
  4. Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with advanced computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills to build a strong network to support the delivery of the service.
  5. Solutions-focused self-starter, with excellent analytical, planning and organisational skills, able to manage staff, projects, and facilities, setting performance standards and establishing protocols to deliver these. 
  6. Comprehensive knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability.
  7. Knowledge of environmental impacts of laboratory work and an interest in reducing the negative impacts.
  8. Excellent organisational skills to be able to coordinate diverse, multi-site teams to support the strategic aims of the School/ Faculty/ University.
  9. Strong record of managing staff and other resources, as evidenced by setting, delivering and monitoring performance standards. 
  10. Contributing to and leading high level strategies, defining the aims, objectives and drawing these down into team members’ work plans.

Desirable criteria

  1. Formal Health & Safety qualification e.g. NEBOSH/IOSH.
  2. Financial training.
  3. Able and willing to provide support beyond core hours, as required
