About Us

King’s History department is an internationally-recognised centre for the study of the history of the world. Our undergraduate curriculum introduces students to world history from the early medieval period to the present; it then offers students pathways to study every continent through their second and third years. Our MA provision is similarly broad, developing students’ expertise in medieval, early modern and modern world history. We are an intellectual home for scholars of every region of the world, who use approaches which range from local micro-histories to large-scale quantitative analysis. We particularly value conversation between scholars of different periods and places, with different approaches.

About the role

The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer specialising in the modern economic history of any region, for twelve months. This is to cover a colleague who has been awarded a research fellowship. We are looking to recruit a colleague with expertise in any aspect of modern economic history, able to teach a range of courses in modern economic history and its methods.

You will conduct and publish high quality research in the subject. You will jointly teach a second year module in Economic History, and also a third year thematic subject on Wealth, together with an advanced, third year skills module on Methods in Economic History. You will contribute to survey modules, taking seminars of core skills modules and possibly MA teaching. You will assume pastoral and administrative responsibilities, and participate actively in the life and culture of the department. A strong research record, excellent teaching ability, outstanding interpersonal skills and a collaborative ethos are essential for the role.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD in modern economic history 
  2. Excellent research in modern economic history 
  3. Ability to convene, teach and assess modules relating to the modern economic history 
  4. Expertise in quantitative economic research techniques 
  5. Ability to engage students, support their learning and support their wellbeing through their degree 
  6. Demonstrable administrative skills or ability 
  7. Evidence of a collaborative ethos, capacity for team-working and enthusiasm for engaging with other colleagues 
  8. Experience of teaching and supporting students at undergraduate level
  9. Excellent research record relative to career stage 

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of teaching and supporting students at postgraduate level
