About Us

The Research Department of Early Life Imaging (formerly the Department of Perinatal Imaging and Health) is part of the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences within King's College London's Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine. The department has a world-leading reputation for conducting innovative neuroimaging research and in particular, for conducting details studies of the developing human brain. To support this, the department has a multidisciplinary staff of 70 people which includes imaging scientists, neuroscientists, cardiovascular scientists, clinicians, and professional services staff. Work of the department additionally is through close collaboration with colleagues in the co-located Research Department of Imaging Physics and Engineering, and the Research Department of Biomedical Computing). The department has recently been awarded over £40m in funding which will support a number of large-scale imaging studies, including £4.2m for the installation of a new low field MRI system in the neonatal unit at St Thomas’ Hospital. There are also close links with the recently opened Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People which provides world-leading mental health services and research for young people.  

The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, King’s College London is a cutting-edge research and teaching division, dedicated to the development, clinical translation, and clinical application of medical imaging and computational modelling technologies. The School’s location within St. Thomas’ Hospital London is central to this, as it offers an exciting opportunity to perform truly translational research. This environment allows for the rapid translation of basic science into clinical applications. Facilities include state-of-the-art chemistry, engineering and physics laboratories, as well as cutting-edge clinical imaging facilities including 8 human MRI systems ranging from 64mT to 7T. This is combined with school-wise expertise in computational and mathematical approaches including machine learning and artificial intelligence.

About The Role

We are looking for an exceptional lecturer/senior lecturer to develop and lead an ambitious programme of Neuroimaging research into early brain development. It is envisaged that the post holder will also support the planned work over the next 7 years within the recently awarded £28m CHiLD MRC Centre of Research Excellence and the £4m Wellcome Developing Children’s Connectome Project which builds on the ERC funded developing Human Connectome Project. They will also establish a position as a national and international leader in developing brain neuroimaging research and contribute to the School of BMEIS educational portfolio through supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. They will have a track record in high impact neuroimaging research including computational image analysis, higher level statistics, and integration with neurobiological information including genetics.  

This is a full time (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD in relevant field or first degree in relevant field and extensive relevant experience.
  2. Track record of high impact neuroimaging research about the developing human brain.
  3. Expertise in computational image analysis, higher level statistics, and integration of neuroimaging data with neurobiological information including genetics.
  4. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  5. Excellent knowledge and understanding of the specified fields of expertise.
  6. Experience of grant writing and track record of successful research funding commensurate with opportunity/career stage.
  7. Experience of writing and publishing papers.
  8. Team player with commitment to both lead and assist in research projects as appropriate

Desirable criteria

  1. Relevant postgraduate certificate in higher education or equivalent
  2. Established network of collaborations in interdisciplinary research
  3. Experience supervising junior researchers
  4. Experience teaching and lecturing at undergraduate/postgraduate level
  5. Contributions to the relevant academic community through open-source software or academic societies
