About Us

The School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Medicine & Sciences (SCMMS) provides a world‑class, multidisciplinary environment for cutting‑edge research in cardiovascular and metabolic science (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/scms).

Our work spans the fundamental molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms that drive normal and abnormal cardiovascular and metabolic function. We translate this strong basic science foundation into innovations that improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment in clinical practice. This collective activity underpins a rich research and training environment for both clinical and non‑clinical scientists.

SCMMS also offers extensive collaborative expertise in data science, advanced imaging and precision surgical approaches. This includes the integration of AI‑driven analytics, high‑resolution imaging technologies and computational modelling to advance personalised cardiovascular care. Together, these capabilities support fully integrated, data‑enabled and precision‑focused translational research across the surgical pathway.

The School spans the Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Denmark Hill campuses of King’s College London and comprises more than 65 academic groups, with 400 staff and 110 PhD students.

Our community of internationally recognised researchers and educators benefit from access to state‑of‑the‑art core facilities, including high‑throughput screening, multimodal in vivo imaging, proteomics, integrative physiology, and viral and non‑viral vector production. As a key part of King’s Health Partners, SCMMS provides an outstanding environment for basic‑clinical collaboration, supported by a strong culture of mentoring and career development.

The School is a partner of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Guy’s and St. Thomas’, which offers world class facilities for translational studies and phase I/II clinical trials.
