'King's is a powerful platform and an exceptional label that will carry you forward'

Meet King’s alum Serhat Aydin (LLM, 2015). The Dickson Poon School of Law graduate was the winner of the 2026 Business and Innovation accolade at the Study UK Alumni Awards in Turkey. Serhat is one of the founders and a partner at Aydın Law in Istanbul. This boutique firm specialises in working as a catalyst to promote sustainability, providing legal advice and representation to domestic and international clients in various sectors.

What attracted you to study at King’s?

London first drew me in as a global financial powerhouse, an international hub where ideas, capital and opportunity intersect, offering unparalleled networking potential.

Having chosen the city, King’s stood out for its intellectually rigorous LLM law degree and its outstanding focus on transactional law. This perfectly aligned with my professional ambitions as a transactional lawyer.

What’s your favourite memory of your time at King’s?

One of my most vivid memories was a private equity finance class, where we worked on a cross-border investment case study with peers from diverse jurisdictions. Debating structural strategies and jurisdictional arbitrage was both intellectually stimulating and eye-opening. This deepened my interest in the complexities and dynamic nature of international transactional law practice.

After graduating, was the plan always to set up your own law firm?

Coming from a middle-class family, with a father who was a retired navy officer, risk-taking was never instinctive to me. Setting up my own law firm was not part of an initial grand plan.

However, a series of events after returning to Turkey, combined with being in the right place at the right time, gradually shaped this path. The perspective, discipline and global outlook I developed during my time at King’s played a defining role in transforming this choice into a confident and meaningful direction.

What was the catalyst for setting up Aydın Law?

‘Receiving this award felt like a meaningful recognition of a multi-layered professional journey,’ says Serhat, seen here at the Study UK Alumni Awards with his wife, Burcu Beygu-Aydin

The real catalyst was my conviction that the green transition is no longer a choice, but an imperative. Having built strong experience and a trusted network within the industry, I saw a unique opportunity to lead this transformation.

As a Chinese proverb wisely puts it, ‘When the winds of change blow, some build walls and others build windmills.’ I chose not to resist the winds of change, but to harness them, transforming disruption into opportunity and shaping long-term value with conviction and purpose.

Can you tell us about the sustainability ethos of Aydın Law?

At Aydın Law, sustainability is not a peripheral commitment but the foundation of our practice. We embed green transformation into every transaction, from structuring sustainable investments to navigating complex regulatory frameworks.

Our work bridges law, finance and policy to enable meaningful change, while ensuring inclusivity and fairness. Beyond compliance, we see law as a catalyst, shaping systems that support a resilient, low-carbon future and creating lasting impact for both business and society.

You won the Business and Innovation accolade at the 2026 Study UK Alumni Awards. Can you tell us about that?

Receiving this award felt like a meaningful recognition of a multi-layered professional journey. As a transactional lawyer, an independent board member in a renewable energy company and a member of an impact investment fund’s investment committee, I believed I reflected the spirit of the category.

Beyond that, it represents a deeper purpose, encouraging younger generations to pursue meaningful paths and reminding us that making our existence impactful is a responsibility we all share.

Finally, what advice would you give to King’s students and alumni wanting to follow in your footsteps and be change-makers?

Never underestimate the power of small actions. Even within my own limited world, I have witnessed how seemingly minor efforts can create meaningful impact on lives I may never even know.

If your goal is to make the world more liveable, you already have what it takes. Trust that King’s is a powerful platform and an exceptional label that will continue to carry you forward.
