Sanskrit is one of the 22 official languages of India. It is the ancestor of languages such as Punjabi, Gujarati, Hindi and Bengali, and extensive borrowing from Sanskrit is a feature of the languages of Southeast Asia, whose early development was greatly influenced by it.
As the language of both Hindu and Buddhist texts, Sanskrit has the reputation of being liturgical in nature. That said, its prodigious and diverse literature includes texts on a huge range of subjects – including diet, aesthetics, statecraft and astronomy.
Our Sanskrit teacher is an experienced practitioner of Sanskrit and uses his knowledge of the language, literature and culture to inspire and encourage students to progress in their learning. He is the author of the forthcoming First Steps Towards Sanskrit (Routledge).
