About the Professional Law Institute

The Professional Law Institute is home to the Law School’s professional education provision and also provides a focal point for practice-based research, civic engagement, as well as strengthening connections to practitioners and stakeholder institutions in the heart of legal London. It is led by our Director of Professional Legal Education, Chris Howard, who is responsible for leading the Law School’s strategy on the development of new professional education courses and assisting the Director or Professional Skills, Mihael Jeklic, with coordination of the School’s existing professional skills modules.

The Professional Law Institute brings together a host of connected activities including: the King’s Legal Clinic; the Professional Skills modules; The Future of Legal Practice events seminars and series; and future professional education programmes.  It also supports mooting, the work of the Careers & Employability team, and practice-based research.

As Director of Professional Legal Education, Chris iIn this capacity, he works closely with the Director of Clinical Legal Education and the Director of Professional Skills. He also coordinates his efforts with the work of the Law School’s Careers & Employability team to ensure that the School provides a full service of support for the career goals of all our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Shaila leads the design and delivery of clinical legal education in the School. She represents the School on all relevant bodies including in the regulatory, professional, not for profit and statutory authority sectors. She also promotes the School’s pro bono and clinical work amongst the wider community, ensuring compliance with standards imposed on the School and under any applicable quality mark scheme.


Legal Clinic Coordinator

Deborah coordinates the day-to-day running of King's Legal Clinic. She oversees the administration of the clinic with the support of student volunteers and runs the clinic's social media presence. Deborah also assists the Clinic Director in supervising student volunteers, ensuring that they understand the clinic's procedures and the importance of ethical issues like client confidentiality.
