King's Legal Clinic working in partnership with The Personal Support Unit (PSU)
King’s Legal Clinic is happy to announce it is working in partnership with The Personal Support Unit (PSU).
The PSU is a national charity that provides free practical and emotional support to litigants in person (LIPs) with cases in the civil and family courts. They provide a vital support to LIPs which includes helping them fill out their court forms and draft legal documentation for their case.
Students from The Dickson Poon School of Law will receive training and supervision from staff at PSU London to volunteer and help LIPs navigate their way through the legal system. Volunteering will allow students to gain a greater understanding of:
- Civil court procedures and how they are used to ensure a case is just and fair.
- Using soft skills, like active listening, when interviewing clients.
- How advocacy is conducted in court hearings.
Stephen Levett, Director of Clinical Legal Education at King’s said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain hands on experience helping real clients deal with their cases. The PSU provides an immensely important service to LIPs and we hope this partnership will give students an insight into the issues concerning access to justice.”
Jane Mahon, London Family Regional Manager for PSU London said:
“The PSU is delighted to be entering into a new partnership with the Dickinson Poon School of Law at King’s. Having recently inducted our first group of student volunteers, we have been impressed with their commitment and passion for the work of the charity. It is our hope that King’s students will bring their energy and focus to assisting Litigants in Person to enable them to better represent themselves and to offer professional and compassionate support to those facing a very difficult time in court alone.”
