Open Access

Monographs

Any academic work can be made open access, including individual book chapters or whole monographs.

Regardless of funder requirements, many monograph publishers permit the deposit of chapters in institutional repositories like Pure, usually after an embargo period. This option is often only available on request, so if authors wish to make chapters open access they should contact their publishers for more information. If you have any further questions about the possibility of making your chapter or monograph open access through deposit in Pure then please contact us at openaccess@kcl.ac.uk.

Wellcome Trust

Currently the Wellcome Trust are the only major funder to require their fundees to make monographs and books chapters open access. If you are Wellcome funded then see the monographs section on this page for further details.

REF2021

The REF2021 open access requirements do not apply to monographs or book chapters.

HEFCE, the body formerly responsible for the next REF, produced this report on the place of monographs in the arts, humanities and social science disciplines, and how they fit into the developing world of open access to research.

FP7

The OpenAIRE pilot fund for FP7 funded projects includes monographs, and will pay up to €6,000, though there are strict criteria for eligibility. More information can be found here. This pilot scheme will end on 28th February 2018.
