King's partners with Metropolitan Police Service

Posted on 29/06/2017

King's Forensics have just announced a new partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), allowing academics and researchers within the university to provide new, innovative research to London's policing units.

Speaking on behalf of the entire department, Dr Barbara Daniel, Head of King's Forensics, stated: 'This alliance will help ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of forensic research and complex casework, while delivering a world-class education to future forensic scientists.

Through schemes such as 'Light it up', which aims to revolutionise the way traces of biological evidence such as blood or saliva are found and identified at crime scenes, King's Forensics is aiming to provide the MPS with cutting-edge research to help improve immediate and follow up analysis of forensic data.

Other research areas that will benefit from this new partnership include fingerprint detection, in-depth DNA analysis and analytical evidence interpretation.

Dr Daniel added: 'Here at King’s Forensics, we work across three main areas of activity – research (e.g. explosives, DNA and drug analysis, analytical toxicology), casework (e.g. crime scene investigation and complex relationship testing) and education. This alliance will help ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of forensic research and complex casework, while delivering a world-class education to future forensic scientists.'

King's is home to two world-leading research laboratories (DNA analysis at King's and Drug Control Centre), strenghting the university's position as a key research hub for the MPS and other bodies.
