Honorary appointments

Honorary appointments conferred by the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine are open to clinicians and allied health-related professionals employed by an NHS Trust or equivalent who contribute to education or research at King’s College London.

Applicants seeking an adjunct appointment to King's are required to have an honorary appointment in place.

What is an honorary appointment?

Honorary appointments are:

  • unpaid appointments conferred on individuals who will contribute to the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine’s education and/or research endeavour.
  • given access to King’s library facilities, IT facilities, including a King’s affiliate email account
  • are permitted to be a primary supervisor for postgraduate research/ PhD students
  • are permitted to hold research grants as a co-PI where they have a permanent member of King’s College London staff acting as co-PI on the project
  • not employed by King’s College London
  • not emeritus titles such as emeritus reader or professor
  • not conferred on King’s College London employees
  • not normally conferred on employees of another higher education institution
  • not open to locum clinicians, or allied health-related professionals on short term contracts
  • not equivalent or the same as the King’s Health Partners’ Passport – i.e. the mechanism by which to gain permission to work at any of the designated sites within the King’s Health Partners. 
Eligibility

All honorary appointees must have a right to work in the UK – confirmed by their current employer.

Honorary Lecturer Non-consultant level, or equivalent – i.e. SPR or Speciality Doctor
Honorary Senior Lecturer Consultant level/ General Practitioner principal/ senior allied health-related professional normally AfC8 or above
Honorary Reader Consultant level/ General Practitioner/ senior allied health-related professional with significant levels of experience and outputs, equivalent to a King’s employed academic Reader in research, education or professional reputation
Honorary Professor  Consultant level/ General Practitioner/ senior allied health-related professional with significant levels of experience with significant levels of experience and outputs, equivalent to a King’s employed academic Professor in research, education or professional reputation

 

Length of honorary appointment
  • five years or where specified, up to five years
  • renewals are possible subject to completion of a reapplication process
  • appointments can be withdrawn by King's with immediate effect where circumstances require
What is expected by King's College London from honorary appointees?
  • compliance with King's financial, academic and ITregulations
  • contribute to the scholastic - education and/or research - endeavour of King's College London

Approval Process

Once a full application has been received, it will be put forward to the Faculty Executive Board for review and approval.  This applies to applications for Honorary Lecturer, Honorary Senior Lecturer, Honorary Reader or Honorary Professor where an equivalent appointment has been made by another higher education institution. 

Where no such equivalent appointment is in place, all first-time applications for Honorary Reader and Professor will be subject to a full review by the Annual Promotions panel in the Faculty.  For this, applicants will be required to supply two external, international references for Honorary Professor applications, and one external, international reference for Honorary Reader.

Honorary appointee promotion
  • Honorary Lecturer to Honorary Senior Lecturer: apply using the standard form for the new appointment level – for review and approval by the Faculty Executive Board
  • Promotion requests from Honorary Senior Lecturer to Honorary Reader, and Honorary Reader to Honorary Professor will be reviewed during the Annual Promotions process in the Faculty.
