About Diversity & Inclusion in the Faculty
The Athena SWAN Charter for women in science was launched in 2005 to initially advance the representation of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) in higher education.
In May 2015 the Charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The Charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, following ten key guiding principles.
There are currently 137 Athena SWAN members, holding 536 awards between them. As of April 2016, a further 76 Athena SWAN awards were given out to departments, including those covering non-STEMM subjects.
King’s College London has been a member of the Athena SWAN Charter since 2007 and held a Bronze institutional award since 2008, which was renewed in 2013. As of May 2017, Divisions in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine hold collectively a total of 15 Athena SWAN: nine Silver and six Bronze.
