Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Unit

Researchers at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Unit led by Andrew Tutt are spearheading new ways to combat a poorly understood and particularly aggressive type of cancer, basel-like breast cancer.

Basal-like breast cancer affects around 6,000 women each year and is more common in young women. It is also more likely to affect women of African origin, accounting for roughly eight in 20 breast cancers compared with two or three in 20 in white women.

Research is focusing on the molecular changes that lead to this type of cancer, aiming to develop new treatments, as well as improving detection and prevention. The disease is more likely to spread to other parts of the body and can be difficult to treat. The work of the centre is designed to lead to new interventions to prevent and treat the disease.
