Dr Grassby wins top chemistry prize

27 September 2011

Dr Terri Grassby, from the Biopolymers Group in the Diabetes & Nutritional Sciences Division, won first prize for her poster presentation to the Royal Society of Chemistry earlier this month.

The competition saw attendees submit and present a poster on the topic of the stability and degradation of carbohydrate structures to a select group of judges. Dr Grassby saw off 12 competitors to win the prize with her presentation on the results of a mathematical model to assess the role of plant cell walls in regulating bioaccessibility, which indicates how much of a nutrient a plant can use once absorbed.

Dr Grassby said: ‘The standard was really high, which led the judges to create two runner up prizes, so I was really shocked and pleased to win the prize.

‘This is the first award I’ve won for presenting science and it has encouraged me to aim for more in the future.'
