The TransCampus network between King’s and Technische Universität Dresden (TUD) has been awarded a €5million grant from the German National Research Foundation for diabetes research.

TransCampus is a large-scale research partnership between academic staff from both London and Dresden established in March 2015. It is the first initiative of its kind in Europe, offering joint recruitment, research and funding opportunities for colleagues from both institutions. In addition to exchange programmes, summer schools and joint training classes the TransCampus establishes joint research and funding programmes.

Funds from this award will support a joint international post-graduate programme, furthering the goal of the International Research Training Group (IRTG) to deliver the world’s leading diabetes training programme.

Professor Stefan Bornstein, who is the TransCampus Dean for King’s and TUD, said “We have to seek new avenues in order to sufficiently address this prevalent disease of modern society. With this IRTG, we established a network of leading scientists on the field, which encompass the expertise of physicians, surgeons, cell biologists, immunologists, material scientists and stem-cell researchers”.

Professor Andreas Birkenfeld is co-spokesman of the IRTG, and said that “young scientists will embark on a training programme equipped with the necessary tools, guidance and expertise to enable them to further develop the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies needed to decelerate and even prevent the Diabetes-epidemic and eventually head towards the healing of the disease in the future.”
