Cardiovascular disease risk of hormone therapy in prostate cancer

Sean O’Farrell, a BRC MRes/PhD student, was selected to present his findings as a ‘late breaking abstract’ at the European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress 2013 held in Amsterdam on 29 September.

His presentation was based on a study examining the risk of cardiovascular disease in men with prostate cancer on hormonal therapy. Using patient information taken from a Swedish database, the study results implied that use of hormonal therapy might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in men with prostate cancer. The study concludes that the role of cardiovascular monitoring or therapy should be investigated during the first year of such therapy, particularly in those who had a heart disease prior to prostate cancer diagnosis.

As a BRC MRes/PhD student, Sean completed laboratory rotations through three project areas during the first year of his programme. The above study was completed during a rotation within the Cancer Epidemiology Group in the Division of Cancer Studies from April to August 2013. His work was supervised by Dr Mieke Van Hemelrijck, Lecturer in Cancer Epidemiology.

The European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress is ‘the main multidisciplinary and multiprofessional educational opportunity in oncology to take place in Europe’.
