The Translational Oncology and Urology Research (TOUR) team aims to turn science into better healthcare by translating uro-oncology research into medical practice. TOUR is led by Dr Mieke Van Hemelrijck, bringing together a team of researchers, clinicians, students, research nurses, trial coordinators, and database managers who are active across the field of translational research. More information about the group can be found here.

The translational research work of the group encompasses a heterogeneous set of activities in the area of prostate, bladder, renal, and testicular cancer, covering both bedside and bench. We specifically focus on the following themes:

  • Clinical and molecular epidemiology
  • Bioinformatics
  • New mathematical methods in biostatistics
  • Immunology
  • Radiotherapy
  • Histopathology
  • Clinical Trials: Phase III trials, RCTs etc.
  • Biobanking
  • Patient care and experience

A lot of our work is closely linked to the recently established Prostate and Bladder Cancer Biobanks.

In addition to their research activities, TOUR is committed to teaching and education. We currently have seven PhD students, a variety of medical students, and teach both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Research News

The TOUR group are leading the way in bladder cancer translational research, establishing an annual Kings Health Partners’ Bladder Cancer Translational Research Meeting, the first taking place on 29th March 2019 at King’s College London’s Strand Campus. This fully interactive bladder cancer clinical research meeting will be led by a wide international expert panel of clinicians and scientists and is designed to bridge the gap between science and clinical practice, covering the spectrum of bladder cancer research in oncology, urology, nursing, epidemiology, immuno- and molecular biology.
