Mentoring and Career Development
The BHF Centre mentoring programme provides a structured mentorship programme for all female scientists and also for male early career researchers.
Mentees will be assigned an individual independent mentor, usually a senior investigator within a different group in the BHF Centre, with whom regular discussion can occur on career progression and other issues related to establishing a career in science. Both mentors and mentees undergo specific training prior to commencement of the programme.
The mentoring programme is led by Professor Cathy Shanahan and interested individuals should contact Cathy by email.
Career Development and Networking
The BHF Centre runs an Early-Career Researchers Forum, to promote and facilitate collaborations and networking between research staff and students. The Forum provides an opportunity to present and discuss your research in an informal setting and socialise with other cardiovascular ECRs. For further information please see our Facebook page.
The KCL Researcher Development Programme offers a wide range of courses and events which are open to all staff and postgraduate research students.
Women in Science
The BHF Centre is committed to promoting the advancement of women in science. A senior female PI leads in this area at each site and provides guidance and support to staff and students as required.
We arrange informal group discussions with international female scientists through the monthly seminar series.
KCL is participating in the Springboard Women's Development Programme, an award winning international programme which allows women to identify the clear, practical and realistic steps they want to take in their career development and also offer Peer Group Mentoring for Women Researchers through Action Learning. These courses are run through the KCL Researcher Development Programme.
Parenting Leave Fund
The College has launched a Parenting Leave Fund to support academic / research staff working in science disciplines at King's who will be returning to work after a period of maternity, paternity or adoption leave.
Eligible staff will be able to apply for up to £20,000 to be used to support them in their work over a period of 12 months.
