BHF Centre of Research Excellence

Training Opportunities

The BHF Centre of Excellence offers an outstanding environment for cardiovascular research training. Training opportunities are available from undergraduate to postgraduate, both for clinical and non-clinical scientists.

BHF Centre 3-year Joint PhD Studentships with Göttingen Heart Centre

The School of Cardiovascular Sciences & Medicine and the Heart Centre at the University of Göttingen offer a joint PhD programme, or an opportunity to participate in shorter-term interdisciplinary research experience under the guidance of the “International Research Training Group” (IRTG). Both learning opportunities offer bilateral exchange between laboratories of participating principal investigators, whose interests focus on phosphorylation and redox signalling in the failing heart.

PhD studentships are typically offered in November.

Undergraduate Prize Scholarships

This competitive scheme provides support for science and intercalating medical students to undertake 3-month research projects within the BHF Centre. The scheme is advertised to students every Spring for research projects in the following year and offers 3-5 scholarships per year to individuals performing at 1st Class Honours level.

MSc in Cardiovascular Research

This 1-year programme provides graduates with theoretical and practical grounding in cardiovascular research, including specialist technical skills training, expert-led workshops and an in-depth laboratory-based project, enabling them to pursue further study (PhD) or employment in cardiovascular research

Inter-disciplinary PhD Studentships

We offer 3-year interdisciplinary BHF Centre PhD studentships, where the student is co-supervised by 1 cardiovascular and 1 non-cardiovascular PI with synergistic expertise. We are particularly keen to attract students with non-biomedical backgrounds (e.g. physics, engineering, chemistry, mathematics). Studentships are generally advertised in November.

BHF 4-year MRes/PhD Programme in Cardiovascular Science

This research-intensive 4-year programme for core cardiovascular training includes an initial MRes year with multiple laboratory rotations and practical workshops that precedes a 3-year PhD project(see 4-year MRes/PhD programme for details). Studentships are normally advertised in November.

Non-Clinical Career Establishment Fellowships

The Centre offers fellowships for talented early-career scientists who are making the first steps towards an independent scientific career. These are advertised at intervals. Cardiovascular scientists who may be at slightly more advanced stages in their career are also welcome to contact us to discuss potential opportunities.

Clinical Academic Training

The Centre provides outstanding PhD and post-graduate training for clinical academics in a wide range of cardiovascular areas. High-calibre individuals should contact us to discuss  potential opportunities.
