Dr Jonathan Edgeworth PhD MRCP FRCPath
Consultant Microbiologist, Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases and Director of the Centre for Clinical Infection and Diagnostics Research.
Jonathan did a PhD in immunology at Cancer Research UK in London, followed by a medical degree at Cambridge, specialist training in microbiology and virology at GSTT, and then a Wellcome Trust funded fellowship working on shigellosis at St George’s University of London and the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He joined GSTT and KCL in 2002 as an academic consultant microbiologist and developed a research interest in antimicrobial resistance and infections in critical care, particularly those due to MRSA and multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria. In 2011, he was appointed founding Director of the KCL/GSTT Centre for Clinical Infection and Diagnostics Research.
His recent research has provided evidence for a key role of decolonisation in preventing transmission of MRSA in critical care, the emergence of MRSA strains with resistance to chlorhexidine-based decolonisation, and the identification of MRSA strains with enhanced virulence in the hospital setting.
Jonathan splits his time between leading the infectious diseases consult service for critical care at GSTT, directing research in CIDR and Medical Director duties at Viapath.
Dr Simon Goldenberg MSc DipHIC FRCPath MD
Consultant Microbiologist and Infection Control Doctor, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Clinical Infectious Diseases
Simon trained in microbiology and virology at Guy’s & St Thomas’, having spent several years in junior general medical posts in various London teaching hospitals. He undertook an MD at King’s College, London in the molecular epidemiology of Clostridium difficile.
Simon is jointly responsible for infection prevention and control at the Trust, focusing on the community and infection control of the built environment. He has an interest in all health care associated infections, in particular Clostridium difficile infection. He is an assistant editor of the Journal of Hospital Infection.
His research focuses on methods to generate appropriate levels of clinical evidence for novel diagnostics for infectious disease. This requires close collaboration between clinicians, scientists, patients, industry and regulatory organisations.
Dr Meera Chand MSc MRCP FRCP
Consultant microbiologist
Meera trained in Cambridge and London and her specialist training in microbiology and virology was completed on the University College London Hospitals and Health Protection Agency programme with a public health microbiology focus. She worked as a locum consultant at the Rare & Imported Pathogens Department at HPA Porton Down and then took up a permanent position in a joint post at Public Health England Reference Microbiology Services and GSTT. For PHE, she works on respiratory, vaccine preventable and emerging infections and has a particular interest in infection in critical care and severe respiratory infections.
Meera works closely with CIDR, providing an understanding of public health priorities in diagnostics and currently supporting work in the area of improving diagnosis and understanding of severe respiratory infections.
