Professor Antony Young's Group

Professor of Experimental Photobiology
St John’s Institute of Dermatology

Photobiology Unit

The Photobiology Unit headed by Antony Young, Professor of Experimental Photobiology, is interested in the acute and long-term adverse effects of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the skin, the most important of which is skin cancer. The Photobiology Unit is also interested in vitamin D photosynthesis which is the only established beneficial effect of solar UVR.

The Photobiology Unit works closely with the St John’s Photodermatology Unit, a clinical department headed by Dr. Robert Sarkany, which treats people suffering from sunlight related skin disorders. The clinical department, based at St Thomas’ hospital is part of Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Trust and is a key department within St John's Institute of Dermatology, and has an associated Photodermatology Research Unit (Biomedical Research Centre) which works closely with the Photobiology Unit in research projects.

Professor Young is chairman of the British Photodermatology Group (BPG), has been the secretary of the American Society for Photobiology (ASP) and is a regular faculty member at the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). He has also served on three working groups of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and was the rapporteur for the European Commission (EC) Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) report (2006) that assessed tanning devices for EC legislation. He recently retired as an associate editor for Photochemistry and Photobiology, the official journal of the ASP, and is photobiology section editor of the Journal of Dermatological Science. He is regularly invited to speak at international photobiology and dermatology meetings.
