Professor Sean Whittaker's Group

Professor of Cutaneous Oncology
St John’s Institute of Dermatology

The cutaneous lymphoma group is led by Professor Sean Whittaker.

The main focus of the group is the study of the molecular pathogenesis of primary cutaneous lympho-mas and the translation of these findings to improve patient treatment responses.

Key discoveries include recent characterisation of chromosomal abnormalities and identification of criti-cal gene mutations and dysregulated signalling pathways in primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL - Mycosis fungoides type and Sezary syndrome).

The group has pioneered the development of molecular diagnostics (TCR/Ig gene analysis) for cutaneous lymphomas and has a large established Research Tissue Bank.

Collaborations exist with Susan John (KCL-DIID); Ghulum Mufti (KCL-Cancer), Charles Lawrie (Oxford), Katy Rezvani (Imperial) and International groups Kees Tensen (Leiden) and Youn Kim (Stanford).

The group is fully integrated with the multidisciplinary skin cancer services provided by the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and has close links with the EORTC Cutaneous Lymphoma Group and the International Society for Cutaneous Lymphomas in developing consensus staging and classification pro-posals and a clinical trials platform with associated translational research programmes.
