Giovanna Lombardi obtained her PhD from the University of Rome, Italy in 1981. In 1987 she joined the Department of Immunology at the Hammersmith Hospital. Then in 2005 she joined King’s College London as a Non-clinical Reader in the Department of Nephrology and Transplantation.
Research interests
We want to study the mechanisms that lead to the induction of tolerance in the context of transplantation to then translate our findings for immunotherapy. The major projects that we are involved in are the following:
- Investigating the phenotype and function of regulatory T cells (Tregs): new markers; subpopulations of Tregs; interaction with their target cells; effect of inflammation.
- Manipulating in vitro or targeting of antigen to dendritic cells (DCs) in vivo to induce tolerance.
- In vitro manipulation of Tregs to generate antigen-specific Tregs for immune therapy: human and mouse Tregs; use of retroviral constructs to confer specificity; ex vivo expansion with immature DCs.
