About Professor Graham Lord

Graham M. Lord MA, MB BChir, FRCP, PhD, qualified in medicine from Cambridge University in 1991 and undertook a period of general clinical training as a junior doctor in Cambridge, Hammersmith, Oxford and the Brompton. Following a specialisation in nephrology, transplantation and general medicine as a registrar at the Hammersmith, he undertook a period of research in transplantation immunology at Imperial College London that led to a PhD in 2000, funded by an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship.

After a further period of clinical training, he was appointed as a consultant in nephrology and transplantation at the Hammersmith in 2003. From 2003-2006, he undertook a period of immunological research at Harvard University funded by an MRC Clinician Scientist award and came back to the UK to become the chair of Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in 2006.

Professor Lord has built up a research group at King’s College London investigating T cell and dendritic cell biology and the genetics of renal disease. In addition, he practices clinical nephrology with a workload that focuses mainly on renal transplantation.

Last year, Professor Lord was involved in devising the strategy and bid for the NIHR Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre, and was appointed as Director of the Centre on 1st April 2012.

Research interests

Our primary research interest is the biology of the innate and adaptive immune systems, uncovering those regulatory gene networks that govern the function and differentiation of immune cell types including T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, NK cells, monocytes and neutrophils. We have a strong commitment to translational research with ongoing clinical research into the immunology of transplantation, inflammatory bowel disease and sepsis. This includes projects investigating both novel biomarkers in these diseases and cutting-edge therapies, including cellular therapy.
