Pharmacology & Therapeutics

Pharmacology is the science concerned with the study of drugs and how they work to combat disease, as well as the search for new, improved drugs. It brings together several biomedical sciences including physiology, biochemistry and toxicology. There are also close links with medicine and pharmacy.

King’s has a long history of teaching pharmacology and our department is dedicated to providing a high-quality learning experience for both our undergraduate and postgraduate students. We have built close links with the pharmaceutical sector, with industry scientists teaching on some courses, giving an inside view of work in drug discovery and development outside universities. These close links also lead to work placements for some of our courses.

With over 30 academic staff, our department includes world-renowned experts in a variety of research fields including neurodegenerative disease, asthma and other inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disease and cell signalling. As one of the largest departments in the UK, we are continuing a strong tradition of excellence and innovation in research-led teaching.

Pharmacology Alumni

King's alumni in the subject have gone on to become leaders in their field.  For example, Malcolm Tanner, Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics at Sheffield Children's Hospital, was awarded a CBE for services to medicine in 2007. Professor Tanner studied Pharmacology and Medicine at King's.
