Social Epidemiology Research Group

The Social Epidemiology Research Group primarily focuses on how social contexts, interactions and experiences shape the occurrence, outcome, and management of mental health problems. Our goal is to provide evidence on the relationships between all aspects of society and mental health problems that can inform the development of interventions, mental health services, public health programmes, and social policies in order to prevent the onset and improve outcomes of mental health problems.

The Statistical Genetics Unit

Led by Professor Cathryn Lewis, it is a cross-school unit, comprising 20 researchers in the Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre and in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics. Our aims are to develop and apply statistical methods to identify and characterise the genetic component to common, complex disorders.

Service User Research Enterprise

The Service User Research Enterprise (SURE) undertakes research that examines mental health services from the perspectives of those that use them, explores empirically and conceptually the impact of service user involvement in research (in terms of both process and outcomes), and critically interrogates how service users have changed knowledge production globally.

Section of Women’s Mental Health

The Section of Women’s Mental Health (SWMH) undertakes mental health services and policy research with a primary focus on women’s mental health. We carry out global research into the gendered determinants of mental health problems and the needs of women with mental health problems using epidemiological and qualitative methods and develop and evaluate interventions to meet those needs and inform health policy. Our work contributes to policymaking and healthcare practice both nationally and internationally.

Trials Methodology Research Group

The Trials Methodology Research Group is focussed on improving the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials for the benefit of participants, researchers, and others who use the evidence to make decisions about healthcare.

TEDS: Twins Early Development Study

The Twin Early Development Study (TEDS) is one of the leading large-scale twin studies in the world. Starting in 1994, it has followed twins born in England and Wales throughout their childhood and adolescence and has now continued into early adulthood.
