This course is broadly equivalent to A1 Basic User, Breakthrough level of the Common European Framework. The course uses a communicative approach in practising all four skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It provides students with a general foundation in the language and culture of the countries where German is spoken in order to cope with a range of predictable, everyday communicative situations encountered when interacting at a basic level. The course follows a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression and covers a range of vocabulary used in various everyday life situations. New vocabulary and grammar will be practised through interactive language exercises developing students' independence and fluency. Guided and independent self-study will be an important element in order to achieve maximum exposure to the target language and to accelerate students' learning pace. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate at a basic level using the four language skills and will gain both cultural competency and linguistic understanding of the German language.

This module aims to enable students to: communicate in Arabic on the subject related to students’ individual research profile at a basic level; develop subject specific competence through Arabic language learning; develop the skills of speaking and reading in Arabic in a range of predictable situations and contexts; interact in a simple way orally in Arabic; develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification; use Arabic to reinforce/further their knowledge of other disciplines; acquire linguistics skills, tools and knowledge to become independent lifelong learners by using Arabic for academic activities and personal enrichment; develop an insight into the nature of language, culture and society; develop a greater degree of intercultural competence; acquire insight into academic and cultural life in the Arab-speaking world; work towards the acquisition of a "fifth language skill", which will enable students to reflect on different cultural values to help them develop intercultural sensitivity; take responsibility for the nature and quality of their learning; act with limited autonomy, under direction or supervision, within defined guidelines. This module has weekly 2-hour seminars for 20 weeks. It is not assessed. There are no credits attached to this module.

Available on the FutureLearn platform, it is a 10- week online course with a weekly 50-minute webinar. The course uses a communicative approach in practicing all four skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Students discover the language in context via videos, articles and audios. Then, they engage in interactive language activities such as quizzes, and discussions. During the online course, students can regularly check what they understood and comment or ask questions to other participants and tutors. The course follows a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression and covers a range of vocabulary used in various everyday life situations. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate at a basic level using the four language skills and will gain both cultural competency and linguistic understanding of the Portuguese language. This module will increase students' understanding and appreciation of the different customs, cultural aspects and diversity of the societies and linguistics of the regions and countries in which Portuguese is spoken, further developing students' awareness of the social and cultural variety of the language. This course -is a micro-credential for independent learners. It is assessed and worth 7.5 ECTS
