Circle U

The King's Language Centre at King’s College London is the largest language centre in the UK, teaching 9,000 students a year.  The King's Language Centre, as part of its collaboration with Circle U is offering language modules to students from European universities. 

About Circle U

Circle U. is an alliance of seven European Universities who share a commitment to developing knowledge in service to society: Aarhus University (Denmark); Humboldt University (Germany); King's College London (U.K.);  UCLouvain (Belgium); University of Oslo (Norway); University of Belgrade (Serbia) and University of Paris (France). In collaboration with a further 34 associated partners, the alliance represents more than 334,000 students and 51,000 academic and administrative staff. 

Co-Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, and formally launched in November 2020, Circle U. aims to create an inclusive, research-intensive, and interdisciplinary European University which provides a multi-cultural and multi-lingual student experience. Students, staff, and external partners work together to develop new initiatives for pedagogical innovation and cutting-edge research which addresses global challenges. In the context of setting up a joint mobility framework amongst the partner universities, King’s College London is launching a pilot programme of blended learning modules.

Module descriptions for Undergraduate students

This course is broadly equivalent to A1 Basic User, Breakthrough level of the Common European Framework. The course uses a communicative approach in practising all four skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It provides students with a general foundation in the language and culture of the countries where German is spoken in order to cope with a range of predictable, everyday communicative situations encountered when interacting at a basic level. The course follows a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression and covers a range of vocabulary used in various everyday life situations. New vocabulary and grammar will be practised through interactive language exercises developing students' independence and fluency. Guided and independent self-study will be an important element in order to achieve maximum exposure to the target language and to accelerate students' learning pace. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate at a basic level using the four language skills and will gain both cultural competency and linguistic understanding of the German language.

Module descriptions for Postgraduate students

This module aims to enable students to: communicate in Arabic on the subject related to students’ individual research profile at a basic level; develop subject specific competence through Arabic language learning; develop the skills of speaking and reading in Arabic in a range of predictable situations and contexts; interact in a simple way orally in Arabic; develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification; use Arabic to reinforce/further their knowledge of other disciplines; acquire linguistics skills, tools and knowledge to become independent lifelong learners by using Arabic for academic activities and personal enrichment; develop an insight into the nature of language, culture and society; develop a greater degree of intercultural competence; acquire insight into academic and cultural life in the Arab-speaking world; work towards the acquisition of a "fifth language skill", which will enable students to reflect on different cultural values to help them develop intercultural sensitivity; take responsibility for the nature and quality of their learning; act with limited autonomy, under direction or supervision, within defined guidelines. This module has weekly 2-hour seminars for 20 weeks. It is not assessed. There are no credits attached to this module.

This course is broadly equivalent to A1 Basic User, Breakthrough level of the Common European Framework. Available on the FutureLearn platform, it is a 10- week online course with a weekly 50-minute webinar. The course uses a communicative approach in practicing all four skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Students discover the language in context via videos, articles and audios. Then, they engage in interactive language activities such as quizzes, and discussions. During the online course, students can regularly check what they understood and comment or ask questions to other participants and tutors. The course follows a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression and covers a range of vocabulary used in various everyday life situations. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate at a basic level using the four language skills and will gain both cultural competency and linguistic understanding of the Portuguese language. This module will increase students' understanding and appreciation of the different customs, cultural aspects and diversity of the societies and linguistics of the regions and countries in which Portuguese is spoken, further developing students' awareness of the social and cultural variety of the language. This course -is a micro-credential for independent learners. It is assessed and worth 7.5 ECTS

Course duration and dates

Undergraduate:

  • German Stage 1:  1 semester module. Teaching will start Tuesday 18 January and end on Thursday 31 March.

Postgraduate:  

  • Arabic for Beginners: Duration: Taught over 2 Terms. Term 1 will start Tuesday 18 January and end on Tuesday 29 March. Term 2 will start on Tuesday 03 May and end on Tuesday 12 July.
  • Portuguese for Global Communication: Duration: 1 semester module. The first weekly webinar will take place on Wednesday 19 January and the last webinar on Wednesday 23 March.

Resources available for you

The Language Resource Centre (LRC) offers free speaking practice for students with a native speaker to improve conversational skills. Our speakers are volunteers and come from the richly diverse King's community.

The LRC also offers a wide variety of resources, workshops and events as well as multilingual learning advisors who are always on hand to help you make the most of the facilities.
