LAHP modules



LAHP students are invited to take a language module at the Modern Language Centre tailored to your PhD studies.  

For the 2018/9 academic year we are offering 6 languages.








Each language module has been structured to:

  • Teach all four language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking

  • Equip you with academic study skills, discipline-specific vocabulary & academic texts

  • Improve your academic presentation skills

The MLC will host several cultural workshops on a wide variety of matters that will enhance your academic studies.

Key Course Information 

  • What levels are available to study? 

    Beginner, Beginner Plus, Intermediate & Advanced.

  • Where are courses taught? 

    Strand Campus, King's College London.

  • How many students are there per class? 

    Between 14 - 16 students.

  • Is there formal assessment? 

    No summative (no final exams), but continuous formative assessment.

  • What level should I choose? 

    Complete a language level assessment with the MLC at the LAHP Open Day on Tuesday 3 July 2018 in the King’s Language Resources Centre, room K-1.07.2 (first basement), Strand Campus.  

  • How do I book a level assessment with the MLC on an alternative date? 

    Students need to book an appointment with the MLC via mlcpartners@kcl.ac.uk and be assessed (either in person, via phone, or skype) by 3 September. 

  • How and when can I enrol? 

    Enrol online by Monday 10 September 2018. You must have had your language level assessed before you can enrol.

Duration & Semester Dates


  • 100 hours total teaching time.

  • 4 hours per week for 25 weeks (Autumn Spring & Summer Term).

Autumn Term:

  • Start: 6 October 2018

  • End: 13 December 2018

Spring Term:

  • Start: 12 January 2019

  • End: 21 March 2019

Summer Term:*

  • Start: 23 April 2019

  • End: 23 May 2019

*Please note that during the Summer Term Saturday classes will run on:

27 April, 11 May, 18 May, 1 June, & 8 June 2019.
