PhD Research

Taking your Music PhD with us here in the heart of London means you are close to many of the capital’s world-class music venues and supervised by staff who passionately believe in the central role of music in today’s culture.

As a department 100% of our research has been rated as having outstanding (4*) and considerable impact (3*) in the most recent Research Excellence Framework so you’ll be in good company.

Our research strengths include music and cultural history from the medieval period to the twenty-first century, composition and performance studies, opera, jazz and film music, the ethnomusicology of South Asia, Latin American and the Middle East.

Our weekly colloquia bring together leading musicologists and composers to discuss their work with our students.  You’ll also be able to enjoy our student societies including King’s College London Symphony Orchestra, the Chapel Choir and GKT Music Society as well as our newly renovated music practice rooms.

Duration Expected to be three years FT, four-six years PT. September to September, January to January or April to April.
