Advocate General Professor Andrea Biondi delivers landmark opinion on key arbitration case

Professor Andrea Biondi, Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and co-director of the Centre of European Law has delivered a crucial opinion clarifying key issues regarding the interplay between peace and justice in the EU and beyond.

The opinion concerns a dispute regarding an arbitration award in front of Swedish courts. The award had been granted to a Russian company, following breach of contract as a result of restrictive measures. The Swedish court asked the CJEU whether, given the EU’s sanctions regime, the claim made by the Russian company could be satisfied.

An advocate general is a magistrate on the CJEU, who is responsible for independently and impartially presenting an opinion on cases assigned to them. Professor Biondi is one of eleven advocates general whose conclusions and opinions are taken into account in rulings by the CJEU.
