The fifteen immersive works in this exhibition were made by undergraduate students as part of the Virtual Realities module led by Dr Gabriele Salciute Civiliene, in the Digital Humanities Department, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The students responded to the theme of selfhood in their work, considering the ways in which immersive technologies change how we relate to ourselves, and each other. Their creative responses were wide ranging, considering the many forces which shape us, from childhood memories to social media. The immersive environments were built using Unity, a 3D game engine often used to prototype world-building scenarios and communicate speculative ideas.

The exhibition has also provided an opportunity for a second group of students to develop skills in curating. Students from the Curating and Preserving Digital Culture module, also led by Dr Gabriele Salciute Civiliene, participated in a series of workshops led by the Science Gallery London team, which supported them in devising a narrative and layout for the exhibition, and producing a short text for the exhibition handout.

Generously supported the Science Gallery team, The Deep Dive Exhibition of immersive worlds created in Unity by King’s Digital Humanities students is a bridge between the classroom and the real world. This wonderful collaboration between the gallery and the students taking courses in Virtual Realities and in Curating & Preserving Digital Culture increases the visibility of innovative education and helps build a community across diverse roles, disciplines, and aspirations.
