Guy's and St Thomas' widens development programme to support predoctoral funding applications

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) has opened applications for a structured development programme to support health professionals produce competitive funding applications for predoctoral awards. For the first time, places available for health and care professionals working across South London and/or at an organisation partnered with the NIHR INSIGHT Programme South London.

Predoctoral awards are a key entry point into a clinical academic career. For example, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Predoctoral Awards support nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and professions allied to healthcare (NMAHPs+) with funded time to develop their research skills and ultimately apply for PhD funding.

The programme at GSTT comprises 12 structured online sessions, each focusing on key aspects of the predoctoral application process.

The programme launches on 10 September 2026, with sessions taking place on Thursdays from 14:00–17:30. You can find out more by joining an online Q&A sessions at 15:00–15:45 on Friday 29 May 2026, or 13:00–13:45 Tuesday 2 June 2026: join the calls directly via this link.

This year, applications are open for health and care professionals working across South London and/or at an NIHR INSIGHT Programme South London partner organisation. The NIHR INSIGHT Programme South London aims to make research accessible and engaging for students and professionals in health and care. You can view the full list of partner institutions here. You must also be eligible to apply for the NIHR Predoctoral Award.
