Memorial Garden at King's earns Green Flag Award
King's' memorial garden has been recognised as one of the country's best green spaces
The Memorial Garden based in King's College London's Guy’s Campus has been given the Green Flag Award, recognising it as one of the country's best green spaces.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the UK.
The scheme noted the garden’s striking Orchid-Lisle living wall and diverse planting scheme.
Located in front of New Hunt’s House Library and the Henriette Raphael Building, the Memorial Garden in King's historic 18th century quadrangle was established to commemorate the men and women who worked at Guy’s Hospital and died during the First and Second World Wars.
During the First World War, many medical professionals from Guy’s were deployed to the front lines to treat casualties. The hospital was later badly damaged during the Blitz. At one end of the garden, the Memorial Arch bears the names of those who lost their lives in both conflicts.
Alongside its historical significance, the garden is notable for its biodiversity. Layered planting of lavender, medicinal herbs and wildflowers supports pollinators and small birds, while bee hotels provide safe nesting sites for solitary bees.
Building thriving campuses that support the wellbeing of staff and students, enhance biodiversity and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future is a core commitment and enabler of King’s Strategy 2030.
