I am so pleased for King’s to have achieved this accreditation. It is a great accomplishment that reflects the hard work and commitment of our community to sustainability. I am particularly glad that this has come out of a partnership between our staff and students, recognising our shared commitment to meeting the needs of society and helping to make the world a more sustainable place.

King's and KCLSU partner to receive international sustainability accreditation
The University and Students’ Union came together on the Responsible Futures initiative
King’s and KCLSU have recently received internationally recognised sustainability accreditation by achieving the Responsible Futures mark.
Responsible Futures, a Higher Education initiative run by Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS UK), is a certification of a whole institution’s commitment to holistic sustainability.
The accreditation was awarded following a detailed audit by a group of eight King’s students, with one student noting that they were “surprised by the breadth of sustainability initiatives taking place across the Partnership and how much work has been done behind the scenes to embed Education for Sustainability into curricula.”
King’s and KCLSU received a score of 250 – 30 points over the threshold to receive accreditation.

The accreditation was awarded on the basis of evidence provided by King’s of our sustainability activities across several key areas, including student outcomes, leadership & strategy, outreach and policy & commitment.
The Responsible Futures accreditation supports King’s strategic priority to equip students with the skills and experiences to shape their own successful futures and make a positive contribution to society.
It also reflects King’s drive towards sustainability, with the University recently committing to embed sustainability within everything we do through its Sustainability Strategy 2026-30.
Dr Louise Logan, who ran the evidence submission process, said:
What makes Responsible Futures particularly valuable is the opportunity for our students to hold us accountable. The unique opportunity for students to interview senior leaders as part of this process also shows them that King's and KCLSU are open to discussion and feedback. This is a powerful means of reflecting on the progress made, recognising where we can do better, and ensuring that our ambitious Sustainability Strategy translates into meaningful action.

Responsible Futures also builds on King’s partnership with KCLSU, with both the University and the Students’ Union being audited together for the accreditation.

This recognition reflects the dedication and hard work of students and staff across our community who are embedding sustainability into education and ensuring that student voices help shape this. With accreditation lasting for two years, King’s next steps now include working to meet the recommendations of the auditors, and continuing to embed sustainability across the institution within our Education, Research and Operations workstreams.
