King's hosts briefing with Director of Medical Technology & Innovation
King’s College London welcomed David Lawson, Director of Medical Technology and Innovation at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) for a lunchtime briefing at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE), convened by the Whitehall & Industry Group (WIG).
The event brought together leaders from across government, industry and academia to hear insights from senior civil servant, David Lawson, who outlined progress on implementing the Life Sciences Sector Plan and the Government’s Medical Technology Strategy.
Professor Sebastien Ourselin FREng FMedSci, Assistant Principal (Innovation) and Head of the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King's opened the event, outlining how work across King’s and LIHE enables the advancement of medical technology to support patient experience, at pace.
Lawson then discussed national efforts to streamline access to MedTech, strengthen cross‑government collaboration and balance innovation with patient safety. His presentation highlighted key programmes including the Design for Life initiative, the Innovative Devices Access Pathway and reforms to procurement and product information systems.
The event also included a Q&A chaired by WIG’s Marcin Stepan, followed by networking among attendees representing healthcare, research, policy and industry. Delivered both in person and via livestream, the session underscored the growing importance of partnership‑driven innovation across the UK life sciences landscape.
