“The atmosphere of the marathon was amazing with crowds lining all 26 miles of the route cheering on participants running the race and offering gels to keep runners going. Even with the injury, I’m really happy with how the race went.”

King's student finishes in top fifth in London Marathon
King's student Diarmuid Bailey completes the London Marathon despite injury, finishing in top fifth

A second-year student in the Department of War Studies at King’s has completed the London Marathon, raising funds for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) while overcoming injury setbacks.
Diarmuid, who is studying for a BA in War Studies and History within the School of Security Studies, crossed the finish line in an impressive 4 hours and 13 minutes - placing him in the top fifth of runners in this year’s race. His achievement is particularly notable given that an injury over the Christmas period significantly limited his training in the months leading up to the marathon.
Despite these challenges, Diarmuid thoroughly enjoyed the experience:
Diarmuid took on the marathon to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, which provides vital support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families. The charity funds a wide range of initiatives, including mental health support, welfare services, and recovery programmes for those affected by service.
He chose to support the RNRMC because of its strong focus on resilience, commitment, and care for those in need - values that resonate closely with him. The marathon, he said, was both a personal challenge and an opportunity to give back to a community he deeply respects.

Looking ahead, Diarmuid is continuing his athletic journey and is set to compete in Ironman Wales this September. His marathon training has laid a strong foundation for the months ahead, as he prepares for the next stage of his endurance challenge.
Although the marathon has now taken place, donations to support Diarmuid’s fundraising efforts remain open, helping to contribute to the ongoing work of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
