King's success at BSODR Annual Meeting 2026

Students and researchers from King's College London celebrated a series of prize wins at the British Society for Oral and Dental Research (BSODR) Annual Meeting 2026, highlighting the breadth and quality of research taking place across the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences.

Senior Colgate Prize

King's PhD researcher Nicholas Warren was awarded the Senior Colgate Prize for his study:

“The Mucosal Pellicle and Nanoparticles: A Potential Route to Keep Oral Actives Working in our Mouths for Longer?”

The research was supervised by Professor Guy Carpenter and Professor Avijit Banerjee.

Winning the Senior Colgate Prize is a significant achievement, and Nicholas will now go on to represent the UK Division at the International Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (IADR) Hatton Awards in 2027 in Melbourne, Australia.

Prize recognises oral medicine research

Another King's success came in the Oral Medicine & Pathology Group Prize, awarded to Haiyang Xu for the study:

“Vitamin D Reprograms Macrophage Immunophenotype and Inflammatory Responses to Porphyromonas gingivalis.”

The project was supervised by Dr Emily Lu, Professor Mike Curtis and Dr Jon Richardson, and provides important insights into immune responses associated with oral disease.

Collaborative research wins Haleon-Mintig Prize

Congratulations also to Steffi Manetta, a LIDO Doctoral Training Partnership student jointly supervised by Queen Mary University of London and King's College London, who received the Haleon-Mintig Prize.

Steffi's award-winning research, “Revealing the Toughening Mechanisms of Prismless Enamel: Machine Learning Resolves Functionally-Graded Crystallographic Ultra-structure in Extreme Biomineralisation Models”, was supervised at King's by Dr Aaron LeBlanc.

A successful meeting for the dental research community

Held from 9-11 September 2026 in Manchester, the BSODR Annual Conference brought together researchers, clinicians and students from across the UK and internationally to share the latest advances in oral and dental research.

The meeting was particularly significant for King's, with Professor Avijit Banerjee, Professor of Cariology & Operative Dentistry, serving as the current BSODR President.

"It was an honour to preside over this hugely successful oral & dental research conference, the most important in the UK. A stellar programme of international distinguished speakers and symposia, encouraged all, from UG students, early career researchers, through to supervisors and senior doyens, to connect, collaborate and co-design ideas and projects. Huge credit go to the Manchester local organising committee and the management committee of the BSODR for running such a successful conference."

Celebrating research excellence

These achievements demonstrate the strength of King's research community and its commitment to advancing knowledge across oral health, biomaterials, immunology and clinical dentistry.

Congratulations to Nicholas, Haiyang, Steffi and their supervisors on their well-deserved success. Their achievements are an excellent example of the impact and innovation emerging from the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences.
