The event was opened by Dr Ylva Baeckström, Senior Lecturer in Finance and Theme Lead (Sustainable Finance) at the Centre for Sustainable Business, King's Business School, alongside Butch Bacani, Head of Insurance at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Seth Eshun, Project Coordinator, Forum for Insurance Transition (FIT), and Emily Farrimond, Executive Fellow at King's Business School and Partner, ESG & Sustainability Lead at Baringa.
A key highlight was the launch of 'Insuring and Investing in the Transition: How insurers and reinsurers can turn the Total Balance Sheet Transition Plan Principles into practice', new guidance developed through the Forum for Insurance Transition (FIT). The FIT is a global, multi-stakeholder initiative convened by UNEP to support insurers and reinsurers to develop, implement and disclosing credible transition plans across their underwriting and investment portfolios.
Another session explored emerging approaches under development by the UNEP Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) Working Group for Nature to better understand how ecosystem condition influences climate-related hazards, and how to translate this into insurance-relevant risk signals.
The event reflects King's 'Strategy 2030', which ensures that climate sustainability continues to be embedded across the university's education, research, and extracurricular opportunities and emphasises partnerships with industry, government and other institutions.
To complete its day of events marking London Climate Action Week, King’s Business School co-hosted an evening panel session with Baringa, focused on mobilising capital for adaptation and resilience.
