Tony Charman

Professor Tony Charman, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Child Psychology at King's IoPPN has been elected as a member of Academia Europaea, a group of outstanding scientists and scholars.

The Academy is a European association for leading experts in science, education and research. Membership is awarded to individuals that have demonstrated ‘sustained academic excellence’, invited by existing members only and judged during a peer review selection process.

Professor Charman’s research aims to better understand development and mental health in autism and the clinical application of this work via screening, diagnostic, intervention and family history studies. He is an Honorary Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He has published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers and over 30 book chapters.

I am honoured to have been elected to Academia Europaea and proud to be part of this institution promoting international collaboration between European scholars and scientists. Science truly is a team effort and this recognition reflects the contributions of the many talented and generous mentors, colleagues, staff and students with whom I have worked over the past 35 years and also the autistic young people and their carers who have contributed to our studies. I am grateful to be able to raise the profile of much-needed research into autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions across Europe through this election.
