King's Sport & Wellness shortlisted for national award recognising outstanding student experience

King's Sport & Wellness

Bringing together academic partners and professional services, the sport & wellness centre promotes positive life habits and strengthens social connections through sport, physical activity and wellness.

King’s Sport & Wellness has been shortlisted for the Excellence in Student Sport Experience category at the CUBO Awards 2026, recognising the innovative, student-led sport and wellbeing delivery taking place in the Sport & Wellness Centre at Waterloo. The integrated model brings together education, research-informed practice and community impact, delivering an outstanding student experience while directly supporting the health of the wider King’s community.

Key to delivery is the on-site clinic, developed in partnership with the King’s Academic Teaching Department. Around 40 students each year take part in academic service placements, overseen by clinical staff, developing valuable clinical experience and confidence by providing over 1,000 free consultations annually to the King’s community. The recent introduction of a joint Physiotherapy Lecturer Practitioner post is further expanding the capacity of the placement programme.

King’s Sport & Wellness offers pre-registration physiotherapy students high-quality, practice-based learning opportunities through its student-led clinic. These experiences not only support students’ academic progression but also equip them to become future leaders in delivering sustainable, effective, and evidence-based care. I am delighted that the new post, supported by FoLSM, will substantially enhance physiotherapy placement capacity and foster further collaboration in service development and research.

The impact of the programme extends beyond clinical placements. Students are also gaining additional qualifications and professional experience across performance sport and wellbeing, supporting King’s ambition to develop future-ready graduates. This year, six students from Sport, Exercise & Medicine Sciences are completing their Level 3 UKSCA (Strength & Conditioning) qualification, putting their learning into practice by delivering weekly sessions to 12 KCLSU student sports teams.

A further seven students are undertaking Level 2 Fitness qualifications, supported by King’s Edge funding, following which they will cut their teeth in the Active Wellness Scheme, which provides one-to-one support to any King’s Student or Staff member who wants to become more physically active but is facing challenges in doing so.

A further expansion of the Sport & Wellness Centre’s reach is demonstrated through a recent initiative with the University’s Security team. Rapid access to physiotherapy assessments and tailored exercise programmes for staff who are facing physical or Musculo-skeletal challenges while carrying out their duties has delivered measurable benefits for staff wellbeing while improving operational effectiveness—demonstrating how King’s expertise can have a meaningful impact across professional services.

Beyond clinical and performance provision, the Sport & Wellness Centre continues to serve as a hub for connection and community. Over the past year, it has hosted more than 50 wellness events, alongside weekly BeActive sessions and King’s Runners meet-ups, helping to build a strong sense of community across the university.

We’re delighted this national recognition highlights the impact of King’s Sport & Wellness in delivering exceptional and inclusive student experiences. It reflects our strong alignment with the University’s King’s 2030 ambitions to support student success both within and beyond the curriculum, while developing sustainable, high-quality services that benefit the entire King’s community
