Wheatstone Lab

Wheatstone Innovation Lab

The Wheatstone Innovation Lab is a shared working, making and learning space for students and staff in the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences. It is intended as a place to test new ideas, experiment in an unstructured way and stimulate creativity and innovation.

Members may request access to the lab for working on projects independent to their studies. Such projects must be agreed in advance with the coordinators, including completion of a risk assessment form for the activity. If specialist equipment is to be used (e.g. 3D printers, milling machine), the member must have undertaken appropriate training.

How do I join the lab?
If you are a member of the NMS faculty, follow the become a member link to fill in the application form. You will need to complete a health and safety induction before you can access the lab and undergo training on the equipment before you can use it.
I am a student from another faculty - can I join?

Unfortunately, at the moment, the space is only open to the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences.

I am a member of staff - can I join?

Yes! If you are an NMS member of staff you can join by filling in the application form. You will need to complete a health and safety induction before you can access the lab and undergo training on the equipment before you can use it.

I've got no experience of using this equipment - can I join?

Of course! Lab members are really friendly and the equipment expert for each piece of kit will be happy to train you on it.

What can I make in the lab?

What can't you make?! As long as it doesn't break the lab rules, isn't illeagal or hazardous, your imagination is the only limit. Take a look at our project gallery to see some of the things members have made.

What equipment is there?

The lab is currently home to:

  • Laser cutter
  • 3D printer
  • and one very expensive sewing machine
How much does it cost?

Access is free to NMS students and staff and materials are provided by the lab.
